Diaphoresis is the medical term used for a situation, in which the body has excessive or abnormal sweating. It is said that sweating is good for health as it cleans up the body and keeps it fresh. But excess of anything is wrong. If you are observing excess or abnormal sweating, it’s time to visit your doctor as soon as possible. 

This situation is also known as secondary hyperhidrosis. And it can affect your body badly. In primary hyperhidrosis, some parts have more sweating as compared to others. Like sweaty hands and feet. Whereas secondary hyperhidrosis is because of nervous system disturbance and it’s an alarming situation.

Causes of Diaphoresis

Diaphoresis has a wide range of causes. It can be caused because of sleep disturbance, anxiety, malaria, and sepsis. Pregnancy is considered one of the major causes of diaphoresis. As in pregnancy, there are a lot of hormonal changes and weight gain. The weight gain thus results in an increase in body temperature hence resulting in increased sweating. But Diaphoresis in pregnancy is usually temporary and it disappears as soon as you deliver your baby. In case it is still there after birth then you need to go to the doctor. 

Another major cause of Diaphoresis in females is Menopause. During this process, your body experiences hot flushes at night and sometimes extreme sweating that can cause a lot of irritation. During periods or before the dates body undergoes a lot of hormonal changes, that’s results in increased sweating. Try to drink a lot of water in this situation, otherwise, your body can collapse anytime. 

Diabetes I also one of the major cause of diaphoresis. 

Other cause of diaphoresis includes

  • Anxiety or depression. 
  • Shakiness
  • Dizziness 
  • Blurred vision. 
  • Difficulty in sleep. 
  • Sudden weight loss. 
  • Obesity 
  • After the heart attack. 
  • Excessive drug intake. 

Symptoms of Diaphoresis. 

The followings are some of the noticed symptoms of Diaphoresis. Read them carefully and in case you are having one of the below, get yourself a complete checkup from your doctor or consultant. 

  • Dizziness or loss of consciousness.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Cold, slimy skin.
  • Watery skin color.
  • Chest pain or heart palpitations.
  • Misfortune breathing.
  • Seizures. 

· High blood pressure. 

These are the basic symptoms of Diaphoresis. Diaphoresis can hurt the body, so don’t take it very easy. 


Well, for treatment it is important to know the cause of diaphoresis. You cannot take any medicine, until and unless you are sure about the cause. In minor Diaphoresis it can be controlled by clinical strength antiperspirant. But in any severe case, you need a complete medical checkup, afterward, the doctors will decide treatment accordingly.
